Final Project;

Through development, the story has morphed into a slightly different one, but nevertheless, it sticks to the general base of the original story. Here are some sketches from the development. First is a general character development sketch of the main character, and then an example of the frame sketches; The sketches are then produced as final inked illustrations. Twenty Illustrations were then imported into Adobe Indesign and then made into a 6.5x10 inch booklet.

The perspective of the altered version of the story has changed to the therapist's office, rather than the crime scene. Throughout most of the story, you are looking in on the meetings between the main character and the therapist. Flash backs occur in the main character throughout these meetings, and it is then where you get a glimpse of the murder she has committed. Unable to deal with the emotional baggage, she decides that suicide is the best way of dealing with it.

Concept Ideas for Individual Project

My plan is to create a twenty page comic book based on a story idea I created back in high school. It is basically about a person who wakes up in a murder scene alone with no recollection of how he got in the room, what happened the few days prior to this, and what he should do next. The story, in first person, focuses on the character's vision, thoughts, and confusion of the event. The reader knows nothing from the beginning (as does the character), with exception of the character's discomfort. Clues start being thrown in here and there for the reader to decipher. By the end of the story, the reader must understand the scope of events; deciding for himself what happened to the character pre-story and post-story. Visually, I believe I can create an edgy comic book that can accurately describe the situation, and the first-person point of view. I feel that since I intend on creating comic books/graphic novels when I'm established as an artist, this would give me a good chance to practice my skills in comic book narrative and execution.

Two comic books come to mind while researching for this project. One, by the name of Ojo created by Sam Kieth, Alex Pardee, and Chris Wisnia, has a style that I find inspiring. I will be working on my comic book while referring to and studying the style of this comic book.

The other, Johnny The Homicidal Maniac created by Jhonen Vasquez has a style that is also intriguing to me. The narrative is also one of my favorites, and I will also be referring to it along side Ojowhile creating this comic book.

On top of these comic books, I have also been researching the crimes committed by the top serial killers and mass murderers in history. It has narrowed down my thoughts on the character's motives and such within the narrative.

The rest of my research includes collecting photographs and Illustrations of strange human contortions and anthropomorphic images. These give me insight to how I want my story to display itself to my viewers.

The format for each page of this piece will be approximately 6.5x10 inches. Frames will also be included within each page (number of each page will be dependent on the tempo of the scenario on the page), and I will be using Johnny The Homicidal Maniac as reference for the format, as well as it's content. I wish to use black ink for the main bulk of the comic. Once Illustrations are sketched out and inked, I hope to scan everything into Adobe Photoshop and Indesign to create a clean looking final. A cover will be created with multimedia; it will also be in color, as apposed to the black and white of the rest of the comic. That will also be scanned in and printed on heavyweight paper. Binding methods are still unknown. I am able to create a staple-bound book, but I would like to experiment in creating a professional looking glue-bound book.

"Three minutes of my life" Video Storyboard

Here is a storyboard for my non-linear "three minutes of my life" video. Basically, the video is meant to bring a scope to the viewer about my life as an artist, and my life as a human being in small pieces. In the beginning, a burning piece of paper will hold a quote that I have used many times in my life to sort out personal issues. The main body of the video will be recordings of me drawing a draft to a painting, and then executing the painting itself, all sped up. Short clips throughout the video and in between the speed painting and drawing will be ones showing my family and loved ones. They will be made to look shaky and ambiguous in order to make the viewer guess and wonder about the events within the short clips. A few songs in mind for this project are Meant to Die by The Used, Saline the Salt Lake Queen by Rasputina, Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes, and Mouths of Babes by the Smashing Pumpkins.

Specifically for this storyboard, many of the shots for the short clips will consist of short, medium, and long shots. The speed drawing will be filmed with a close up shot and the speed painting will be filmed with a medium shot. Frames 2 and 6 show graphic relationships, as do frames 4 and 7. Frames 3, 5, and 8 display a rhythmic relationship.

Book/Narrative Development

Based on this sketch, a narrative will be executed. It is meant to represent a community of people. The concept, though still in development will describe one of those creatures (people) being singled out of the community, whether it be socially, physically (by disease or disability, etc.) or by other forms of neglect, rejection, or the feeling of being different. In the original idea, the character in the narrative soon finds that it is not the only one who thinks in this way, thus finding his own community of comrades. This concept is still in major development and may be subject to change throughout the process of creating this narrative. As far as physical appearance, I plan to use a multimedia surface with ink drawings to accompany little to no text.
